Off roading in the wintertime brings on new challenges, as I have mentioned before, however sand and snow are not much different other than extreme freezing temperatures! Here are some helpful tips to help keep you from winding up stuck in a position that could put you at serious risk.

1. When riding through deep snow or sand, deflate your tires slightly to increase the tire’s footprint and provide better traction. Remember though that deflated tires decrease your ground clearance. Also do not forget to re-inflate them before going back out on the public roads.

2. Use higher gears and keep your speed up and your momentum steady to pull through. Avoid spinning your tires. When you spin your tires you heat them up and the snow beneath you causing melting, then icy slicker conditions. If your wheels start to spin, ease off the throttle just a bit and allow the tires to slow down and regain traction.

3. If you lose traction and your jeep is barely moving start turning the steering wheel quickly from side to side in short strokes, causing a rocking motion and allowing the front tire walls to find extra grip. You don’t have to turn them more than an 1/8th of turn side to side.

4. If packed snow conditions force you to drive in ruts, always know where your front wheels are pointed. Your Jeep will follow the follow the ruts, even when you try turning out of them. Keep your wheel in line with the rut. Should you encounter an area where the rut is not as severe and you have your wheel turned out of the rut, your tire will regain traction causing your Jeep to veer off sharply and quickly making it very possible for you to lose control and cause damage to your Jeep.

5. Remember that hard snow crossed in the early morning can be impassable when soft in the afternoon.

More and more trails are being closed down lately and although they are not all related to the users driving ethics, displaying good driving ethics and consideration for the land helps to keep off roaders in a positive light.

A concerned off roader who displays good driving ethics always leaves the area in better shape than when they arrived. Waste is properly disposed of properly, fire is used respectfully – in moderation and only with proper authorization, and you take every precaution to avoid spreading invasive species.

An off roader displaying good driving ethics has respect for others using the trails including hikers, bikers, campers as well as their fellow off roading enthusiasts. Although with off roading trails there is expected to be activity and even a certain level of noise, however, always do your best not to outwardly try to disturb others. Granted, if campers are camping out along a off roading trail they should expect a certain level of activity as well as noise, however when possible try to hold the noise level and dirt level down when driving past them. Keep the excessive “after trail partying” noise level down as well.

Encourage your friends with you also to abide by these standards. With everyone working together, we can give off roaders a better image and cease the negativity from the environmentalists and the media.

Thank you!

I want to share with you all one of the most amazing videos I have seen and in a long time, and probably the best ever presentation of the National Anthem yet.

The Carolina Crawler’s is based out of Jacksonville, North Carolina and sponsored by Jacksonville Van & 4×4 and are yet another Jeep club formed for off road Jeep enthusiasts! Their trail rides vary in difficulty from mild to wild, depending on the modification level of the trucks in attendance. One of the great things I saw about this Jeep club was the open invitation to ride with them if one was to be in their neck of the woods. All they ask is that if you know that you are going to be in their area that you shoot them off an email and let them know and if there is an event going on at the time they will give you all the details and welcome you warmly, as most Jeepsters do! Their email address is: Events@bluffcityjaguarlandrover.com.

If you would like to become a member of the Carolina Crawlers visit their website here.
