If you are getting into the Jeep lifestyle and have recently joined the world of off roaders, you should seriously consider joining an off roading club. These clubs offer many benefits that you would not think of. Not only will you have the camaraderie of others sharing your lifestyle choices, but you will also have access to a support network that you wouldn’t believe. Here are some of the top reasons to join an off roading club.

  1. You will have buddies to go off roading with. It is always best to go off road with a buddy or two or three or more. This way if something goes wrong you have someone there to help you. You should never go off road alone.
  2. If you are dumb enough, or inexperienced enough, to go off roading alone, you will have someone to call on if you get stuck. Anything could go wrong when you are out on the trail. Something could break or stop working, you could flip, or worse you could roll your Jeep. Having someone to call that can get you out of sticky situations can be a blessing in disguise.
  3. Many club members will do anything to help out a fellow member. This includes swapping parts and helping with upgrades and Jeep modifications. Some clubs spend every weekend together, and work on someone’s rig nearly every weekend. If you have a lot of work to do on your off road vehicle, this is a great way to get some help with it. Just remember that you have to be willing to help out on someone else’s vehicle as well.
  4. Having off road buddies is more like having another family than having friends. Everyone watches out for everyone else.
  5. You can get a lot of advice and tips on how to modify your vehicle or what to do when you take your vehicle out on the trail from people who have already been there. Even newer off roading groups often have at least one or two members that are very experienced in off roading and Jeep mods. This advice and help can go a long way to a beginner.

Of course, all of these benefits can only be had if you choose the right off roading club. Visit a club and attend a meeting or two, maybe go on an outing, before you decide for sure that the group is for you.

As most people know it is harder and harder for Jeep lovers to find places to play off-road without fear of the authorities running you off, or worse, putting you in handcuffs. That is why we occasionally drop you a little note about a cool place to play safely and legally. This month we are focusing on a park opening at the end of summer or early fall of 2012 called Wicked Hills Off-Road Park.

Wicked Hills is located at 271 Parmenter Hill Road in China, Maine which is one of the highest points in central Maine. The location and elevation are perfect for varied topography with amazing views. The park boasts 605 acres boarded by Palermo and China (the city not the country) on the east and Bog Brook on the west. Locals tell us that Wicked Hills is easy to find and has great paved roads leading into the park as well as tons of parking for trailers and other vehicles.

Once inside the park; off-roaders will be pleased to find a mix of old country roads, tote roads and discontinued roads. We have been told that the most of the roads have been cleared of any major issues which will allow for a fun day on the trails without having to worry about removing unwanted brush. The trails have a nice mix of steep inclines for the expert off-roaders as well as milder terrain for the newer riders.

Wicked Hills plans to open the park this summer with just the basic needs and little else. Once the park starts to gain popularity they plan on doing a phase 2 building project which will add camping, food, bathrooms, and pavilions for lunches and picnics. They are also hoping to add an obstacle course and more trails as well.

Out-of-towners looking to take a little vacation in Maine will be pleased to find China Lake about 6 miles west of Wicked Hills. The lake is a great place for spring and fall trout fishing and summer bass fishing. Boat rentals are also available at the Lake. There are also a bunch of well-priced cabin rentals and few bed and breakfasts as well.

The park has not opened yet, but you can keep an eye on the progress by visiting their website at wickedhills.com. Currently they are doing a monthly update as they work their way through the permit process.

Twisted Trails Off Road Park

Twisted Trails Off Road Park

From time to time we like to take a look at the various off-road trails and facilities across the country. Today we will focus on the Twisted Trails Off-Road Park in Copemish, Michigan managed by the Dusters Off-Road Club.

Overview
The off-road park has been opened for 5 years and they are proud to call it a “people’s park” because they focus on making the off-road lover happy with whatever they are looking for in an excursion. They are open

Twisted Trials Off-Road Park offers a wide range of activities for owners of 4×4 Jeeps, atvs, dirt bikes, and other 4×4 off-road vehicles. The off-road adventures include: “mild to wild” trials, rock crawls, sand drags, a trail master challenge, an obstacle course and a full race facility.

The park is open year road for regular visits and they also host a variety of events throughout the year. Most of the special events are done as fundraisers for local non-profit organizations that are near and dear to the park’s heart. Some of the causes include Toys for Tots, US Soldiers and the VFW.

Camping
One of the best parts about the Twisted Trails Off-Road Park is the fact that you can camp right next to the grounds of the park. This is great because you won’t have to waste time driving from a distant camp site to the trails.

They have 30 rustic sites that feature a woodsy setting with running water, and portable toilets. The setting is a little rough, but as we all know Jeep lovers like to rough it! Reservations are available, but if you can also chance it and hope you can get a spot.

Other Info
There is a small entry fee for each person entering the park. The park also offers ATV rentals for Jeep owners who also like to trail ride on something a little less exciting. They offer half day rentals, full day rentals and two day rentals.

There are many benefits to becoming a member in an off road club. Some of these benefits include getting a lower insurance rate, participating in local off-roading events and making new friends who share the same passion as you do. Other benefits include off-roading on trails that you may not have had access to if you weren’t a member of an off road club. There are usually fees associated with becoming a member of a club, but many off-roaders feel that it is money well spent.

As a member of a local off road club, you may also benefit from special deals that the club has made with various businesses in your area. Some of these may include discounts on road service if your vehicle should become damaged. Other deals may be lower prices on auto insurance as well as discounts at repair shops. Becoming a member of an off road club, also proves to repair shops that you are dedicated and take the sport seriously which may lead to you becoming a valuable client to their business.

Becoming a member of an off road club will also allow you to participate in events that you may have not been able to participate in before. Because you belong to a club, you may find that these events are now more enjoyable than they were when you were attending them on your own. A club guarantees that you are surrounded by people who share the same passion for off-roading that you do. Events that are organized by a club are also safer than those that are not. An event planned by a local club will have all of the safety professionals that are in place to make the event more enjoyable and provide emergency care if something should happen.

By becoming a member of an off road club, you will also be able to bring your family along when you attend events. A club offers members a sense of belonging and safety; it is not uncommon to see families attending events that you attended on your own before you joined a club. There are many benefits to joining an off club, but you need to decide if it is the right choice for you.
