Being an avid four wheeler, I live by my motto of restore, break, rebuild. My latest challenge was rebuilding the many years of abuse and neglect associated with my recent purchase of a Jeep CJ 7. Among many things needed that were purely cosmetic, I decided to get it up and running. My Jeep was equipped with a strong V 8. This is a common swap for some,but it was the selling point for me. The engine was running fair and the drive train was fine. No over heating proved that the coolant system was functioning and it visually seems to be holding tight on all other fluids because there were no puddles on my driveway. The only thing left for inspection was the brake system. A stronger engine means faster acceleration and sometimes the ability to tow, as the CJ’s chassis is rated to tow up to 2,000 lbs. However, the ability of the Jeep’s brake to bring things to a safe halt may be below what it should be. This is a scary issue for me coupled with the fact that I will be putting larger tires and rims on my rig. Most people forget that bigger tires and rims may call for a brakes upgrade.

As a general rule, if the brakes on your Jeep were good before the swap, they will probably adequate after the swap. However, many CJ’s had questionable brakes from the factory. It is up to the individual doing the conversion to ascertain whether or not to upgrade the braking system.This is where I fail. Being a Bronco fan I had no knowledge of Jeep brakes but was willing to learn.

I heard stories of the ultimate bulletproof rebuilds, brake upgrades,substituting Nissan Maxima and 300z brake parts but being a novice to Jeep brake replacement I chose to go with a stock rebuild. Taking pointers from the Jeep gurus on many forums,I set out to rebuild with stock parts and upgrade where my pocket book or my wife would allow. I found a web site called Xtremeterrain.com and began to root through for the much needed parts. After hours of looking and cross referencing I located the parts. The Xtremeterrain website was clear and fully stocked for any option. I surfed and checked out many parts that were labeled with enough info for me to make an intelligent decision and not break the bank.

Days went by as I waited to be assisted by anyone who stopped by my house. I’m not a master mechanic so it did take much longer than I thought but the parts went on without a hitch. Today I kinda smile when people say “hey nice rig” . I put in many hours. Restore,break,rebuild. Jeep life!

My name is Jeff Hiltz, A.K.A. “The Pirate” (I was blinded in one eye as a teen and have worn an eyepatch ever since.) I’m 46 years old, although I don’t really act, look or feel it! My Jeep keeps me young!

I’m in love with a sweet Jeep girl, Cindy (Luvmyjeep on our message board) who I met on on a “Support Our Troops” run with the Nova Scotia Jeep Club and we have been together ever since, I have already been down on one knee in the mud to ask her for her hand in marriage and we’ll be having a Jeep themed wedding in the next year or two.

 

My Jeep, A.K.A. “The Pirateship” is a 2003 Jeep TJ Sport that I purchased new in 2004. Right away I fully skidplated (Diff covers, oil/engine, steering box, Warn rocksliders) and wheeled her hard for a couple years before putting some lift and 33’s, and it wasn’t much longer I was bitten by the rock crawling bug and had a need to crawl. I picked up some cheap d44’s (Scout front and XJ rear), loaded them with Chromoly shafts, lockers, 5:13’s, then to really slow her down installed a 231/d300 doubler giving me a crawl ratio of 155:1. The build got out of hand and I decided to change the suspension and went with a 8″ Rock Krawler long arm kit with coilovers. One of my latest modifications are my custom boatsides giving me 3 feet of clearance under my doors.

I run 37″ Maxxis Creepy Crawlers on the trails and being that it is still my grocery ghetta and daily driver I run 37″ BFG KM2’s for the streets and mild wheeling. For front end recovery I have a Warn Powerplant. Underneath attached to my engine skid you’ll find a Runva 3500 winch for suck down and soon to have one for rear suck down also.

My only regret is that I didn’t go with tons right away, although I have only broken one axle and that was purely because I was on my side and tried to drive out of it. I have since picked up some RCV Performance CV’s for the front to be installed before the snow melts off the rocks.
The next mods are to stretch her nine inches, a full cage and then move my coilover mounts up higher to bring it all down a little.

Nova Scotia has an amazing amount of trails, there are many hundred year old j-class roads which have been abandoned for years allowing wash outs to form making for some great wheeling and granite boulders are everywhere. A good friend of mine has 500 acres that we have built Jeep and Land Rover specific trails that zig zag back and forth down the North Mountain of the Annapolis Valley on the most slick and slippery most challenging mud you’ll ever find. Then I have another friend with a big chunk of land that has been concentrating on building some crazy buggy trails all over his property. Nova Scotia has everything from mild to wild!

My favorite spot to wheel is probably “High Voltage” which is a powerline trail that has xtreme rock faces going up and down for 4 miles; with lines, you could run with 33’s or lines to challenge the best of buggies.

I’ve had a few Jeeps over the years but it wasn’t till close to ten years ago that I got real serious into wheeling. Originally my Jeeps were purchased to get me to the fishing holes but then I started to find it more fun getting to the fishing holes than actually fishing. Wheeling fast became a severe addiction, I couldn’t stay home. I’d lay in bed at night craving an urge to put the Jeep in 4 low; it was getting out of hand. There was a few years that I spent at least 4 days a week wheeling and if I wasn’t wheeling my friend and I were cutting new trails on his property. I just couldn’t get enough. If anyone ever wanted to go wheeling they knew that they could count on me going out. I just wish I had a hour gauge on my Jeep rather than an odometer to keep track of the thousands of hours logged behind the wheel; you know those days when it takes five hours to go five hundred meters. Those are usually really good days!

Back in 2004 I became a member of the Annapolis Valley Chapter of the Nova Scotia Jeep Club. For the first 4 or 5 years I was extremely active in the club, organizing weekly trail rides, weekly coffee nights and getting involved in everything I could with the club. My first year with the club yielded several awards for “Rookie of the Year”, “Club Spirit Award” to the “Trail Clearing Award”, not that the awards mattered, I was doing it because of my huge passion for the sport and the club. I then started trail guiding for Jeep Jamboree Canada until Daimler Chrysler pulled their funding for the event in 2007 but that wasn’t stopping the NSJC from hosting the event. Beings we did all the work of organizing the event anyways, from choosing the trails and clearing the trails for the event, our club took the reigns and turned it into the NSJC Jamboree which fast became a huge success continuing yearly in June and welcoming well over one hundred Jeeps yearly from all across the maritime provinces of Canada into the States bringing Jeepers from New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine and others. When asked if I had any stories or incidents that I would like to share, there is always one that pops into my head immediately.
It was the 2006 Jamboree and I was trail guiding a trail we call Tia’s Trail (named after a loved member of the NSJC Tia, it was her favorite trail, our much loved friend Tia was taken from us after a courageous and hard fought battle with Cystic Fibrosis at a young age of 21). Back to the story, I was trail guide and tail gunner on Tia’s Trail and at the drivers meeting that we hold at the trail head, we gave our usual little spiel of do’s and don’ts and then I proceeded to tell the participants about the trail. I told them “Tia’s trail” is a very tight trail that winds down the mountain and most of the trail is quite off camber; you will really feel like you might go over but you won’t, no one has and no one will!! Big 6, our trail leader that day, took everyone down the first hill and through the first off camber section without incident, then it was my turn and having run the trail a hundred times before I was feeling a little cocky and tried to hold the high side of the trail but the wet slimy mud didn’t allow me to hold the high side sending me sliding sideways and flopping my Grand Cherokee on it’s side. Back at the closing ceremonies I was fired as a trail guide (all in fun) and they gave me a certificate for the Jeep 101 that participants who took the 101 course receive, except mine had “REVOKED” written across it. I have never lived it down and till this day I am still the only person to ever flop on that trail.

As much as I love off-roading I also enjoy photography and videography. On almost every trail ride I enjoy shooting and editing my pictures and video and upload to my Youtube Channel, “Pirate Jeep Productions” and my photography to my Pbase photography site.

NEVER EVER, overlook that a dead vehicle may be due to a blown fuse…I can’t count how many times I’ve seen people spend 30-plus minutes trying to change a fuel pump, etc. and find out it’s a bad fuse. Many times older rigs have less than ideal wiring situations and it may take some poking about to find “all” the fuses for a particular component. ~ Lee Boening

#86. Keep a potato in your tool bag – it is the best odd addition you can have. You can use to fill a hole in the radiator. You can cut and rub over your windshield to have water bead up if your wipers stop working. You can use it for quick trail food if you break down and have to camp, plus it is bio degradable for trail friendly people. ~ Pam Cechini

The reason we don’t use chain is not because they may break and hurt someone but it is because they have no give and when pulling a vehicle out with a hard tug with chains might break one of the vehicles, chain does not store energy so it will rarely fly through the air, in fact tow straps store energy and that’s what makes the recovery easier BUT when they break they will fly like something thrown with a slingshot, I had a strap break once and the 10 foot piece that came back at my Jeep caved my steel Jeep grill right in!! ~ Jeff Hiltz

#88. Always remember that an 8000LB winch is only an 8000LB winch when your cable is down to the last wrap on the drum!! ~ Jeff Hiltz

#89. Never attach two snatch straps together for recovery using a d-ring or clevis…If something lets go during the recovery that d-ring or clevis will turn into projectile that can and will KILL. There have been instances where the strap broke… and the d-ring came back at the Jeep at hundreds of mph, through the tailgate and through the drivers seat killing the driver. Recovery is NOT something to be taken lightly!! Play safe!! ~ Jeff Hiltz

#98. When recovering a stuck vehicle if you are not directly involved stay back. If the strap or cable breaks it can take off an arm, leg or put out an eye. If the strap is 20 feet long stay back at least 25 or so feet. ~ Hozer Outlaw

Zach Harkness

How many Jeeps have you owned in your lifetime? – 1? 2? Maybe even 3? How about 17 and still going strong? I know of one person who can say they have owned 17 jeeps in their lifetime and I am pretty sure that number will continue to grow. That person would be none the less then Zach Harkness – today’s featured Jeeper. Allow me to turn this over to Zach while he shares his love of Jeeps!

“I grew up Jeeping from when I was little in my dads 83 CJ-7; almost everyone in our family owns a Jeep or two. My wife and I currently have two Jeeps a 2009 JK and a 2001 Grand Cherokee Limited with the upcountry package. I used two be the main Fabricator for a local Jeep shop in Salt Lake and have built almost every kind of Jeep there is but for the last four years I have been doing home loans.”

“I have been married to my wife Kathy for two years this coming February and our favorite thing to do is jump in one of the Jeeps for the weekend and see where it takes us, the farther away from any civilization the better. Our son Zach is 11 years old and is always asking when we are going to go on our next ride. Our favorite place to go is usually Moab and I know most trails very well since I lived there for around 5 years and ran many of the trails doing daily tours.”

“One of our most memorable wheeling incidents was a trip through Capital Reef and then taking an old trail through Wild Horse Canyon to Goblin Valley in our 2001 Grand Cherokee last year. We made it to the muddy river but it had been washed out really bad so the road was completely gone and the river bed was just really soft silt mixed with gravel type rocks. It ended up sinking the whole front of the Grand Cherokee and stranding us on Thanksgiving weekend in the middle of nowhere. I ended up hiking 15 miles to the nearest highway and getting a ride to a hotel 8 miles away and calling the Utah Highway Patrol and search and rescue, my cell phone couldn’t get any reception and when it finally did the battery died.”

“We went back for my wife, son and Grandpa who were still waiting at the Jeep for rescue and had built a fire to stay warm with no matches or a lighter. It was 22 degree’s at the warmest part of day so it is easy to say that was the coldest hike or walk I have ever had to make. The whole thing started around 10:00 A.M. and we got home around 1:30 A.M. in the morning.”

Krista Kunkel

It has been a while since we have had a featured Jeeper so I am pleased to bring to you Krista Kunkel. Without further ado.. allow me to introduce you to Krista, a Michigan girl with a big love for Jeeps and Jeep off roading!

 


Hi everyone, my name is Krista Kunkel. I’m 20 years old with a birthday coming up on February 13th. I am not married but I am dating a Jeep boy and we do spend most of our time under one of our Jeeps working on them together. Our conversations always consist of the word “Jeep”. My last boyfriend actually ended up breaking up with me because he couldn’t take the fact my Jeep is my love. (haha)

I’m a small tattooed pistol of a girl and I have tons of Jeep smarts to back me up. Many of my MODS are all my ideas or something I made. The Jeep quote I most relate to is “I live. I ride. I am” used in Jeep commercial which describes me perfectly. Another one of my favorite off roading quotes is “My Jeep won a War, What did your car do?”

I am a real Jeep girl and everything in my life revolves around my Jeep. I have a 1998 Jeep Wrangler Tj, The best mod I have which I think is just the funniest to me is my ” angry eyes” I get a lot of laughs because of that. The worst mod would be the fact my light racks chrome so I have to keep repainting it black but I cant complain it was a gift.

I don’t have a favorite off road spot because I think the best part of offroading is when you find someplace randomly but as for a park the only one I’ve went to as of now is the Mounds because everything was closing when my Jeep was offroad ready. I am looking forward to the summer though to visit the other Michigan parks.

I ended up becoming one of the original members to pull a club together for southeast Michigan – N2Deep. We wanted to focus on getting all Jeeps together stock or not in our area. We are a free club and family friendly.

I think for me, I love offroading because I love to be in the mud. I love when my Jeep does something I didn’t expect it to or how when someone breaks down everyone stops to help. No Jeeper is ever left behind. I was really surprised the first time when my Jeep broke down at the mounds because water got in my distributor and not one but ten people stopped and waited for me to get it fixed. I also enjoy showing the men that women also can do something that was once consider to be a “man thing”.

By the time this is posted on the blog I will be ripping my Jeep apart and putting a new Rough Country lift on because I believe in go big or go home. I will be purchasing the Rough Country 4″ kit but with my body lift staying I will be sitting at 5″s all together.

Alexander Traver


Today I bring to you a young man who is fairly new to the Jeepin world but already hooked! Residing in Texas, Alex is almost 18, birthday at the end of this month.. (Happy Birthday early Alex!!) who resides in Texas. As a college student, he has all the great dreams and hopes for the future, I am sure for himself, but for his Jeep as well.. But finances can be a little tough during college years.

Alex runs a 1995 Jeep Cherokee as you see in the picture above. He doesn’t have the time he would like to be able to do a whole lot of off roading but when he can he hits the dessert or plays on some land his family owns.

One of Alex’s favorite Jeep off roading quotes he told us is “Hold my drink, I wanna try something.”

We asked Alex if he could have any modifications done, what would they be?
Alex told us “Any modifications huh? I’m building my rig on a student budget, so realistically, I’d love a tire carrier (Detours Tailbone Ideally), a lift which I’m slowly piecing together, front fiberglass fenders, and some interior work. And tires. :)” Pretty fair I would say, but I bet he could think of some more if money wasn’t an factor! 😉

When Alex was asked what was his best/worse modification he told us “Best mod so far has been, don’t laugh, fixing the switch in my overhead lights. Worst mod, I don’t know yet. Haven’t done it yet.” We are not laughing Alex… we totally understand!

Alex told us he us not a member of any off roading clubs or anything like that as he doesn’t get the opportunity to get around to wheeling as often as he likes. His Jeep is also his daily driver, and he has to rely on it for school, work, etc.

Alex started messing around off roading as soon as he was able to drive and t is the best thing in the world. He stated he definitely wouldn’t drive anything off road other then a Jeep. When asked why, because face it, there are other options, his response was because Jeeps are simple and so easy to modify. He may be young, but he sure isn’t dumb!

Kegan Baker


If you have been following the Featured Jeeper blogs you will see one thing that is shows tons of diversity, the age of Jeep off roading enthusiasts… from the young to the old, one thing that is always the same is the love of it. Today’s Featured Jeeper is Kegan Baker. Read on to get to know this young Jeep enthusiast and catch a glimpse of a little softer side of Jeepers. Just because you are into extreme sports like off-roading doesn’t mean there is not a soft side under all that adrenaline. .

XtremeTerrain: A little about you Kegan.
Kegan Baker: Hi, I am 22 years old, single and have a wonderful 4 year old son. I am a Railroad Contractor and reside in Tennessee

XtremeTerrain: What type of Jeep do you run?
Kegan Baker: I run a 1998 Jeep Cherokee “XJ” Limited

XtremeTerrain: Favorite spot to off road?
Kegan Baker: Favorite spot is Windrock Offroad Park in Oliver Springs, TN.

XtremeTerrain: Favorite off roading quote?
Kegan Baker: Favorite quote would probably be “this side up” or “Don’t worry that sounds normal.”

XtremeTerrain: If you could have any modifications done, what would they be?
Kegan Baker: If I could have any kind of modification done, I would like a Dana 44’s front and rear with 4.88s and ARB lockers.

XtremeTerrain: What was your best/worse modification if any?
Kegan Baker: Best modifications I have done have been Chromoly shafts in my D30 along with 4.10s and a ARB air locker; Super 35 kit in the rear also with 4.10s and a ARB locker.
Worst mod would be putting lockers and Chromoly shafts in the D30 / 35 instead of just paying a little more for D44s; Warn front bumper with XD9000I winch “old style”; and Warn rock sliders, 4.5 in. Rustys short arm.

XtremeTerrain: Do you belong to any off roading organization, if so which one(s)?
Kegan Baker: I’m looking to join several local off-road clubs once my jeeps complete, or at least closer to being finished.

XtremeTerrain: How old were you when you first started off roading?
Kegan Baker: First started wheelin at age 14, rode dirt bikes and 4-wheelers until I was 22. It was ten I decided to sell my built 1995 Mustang GT and get into jeeps, and rock crawlin. No regrets!

XtremeTerrain: Why you love Jeep Off Roading?
Kegan Baker: I got into Jeeps instead of anything else because of the massive aftermarket support. The fans and the people that are all into jeeps is more like one big family, especially at Jamborees. Everyone helps everyone else, give tips, share modifications, and stories. There is never a dull moment!

XtremeTerrain: Any off roading story or incident you would like to share.
Kegan Baker: One off roading incident that comes to mind is when I got stuck between 2 rocks on a local trail. I broke a front axle shaft then my rear driveshaft “all within about 15 seconds.” I had to winch & be towed 2.4 miles back to the trail head where I removed my broken shaft and rear driveshaft and drove back to camp with one wheel drive. Lesson learned? I now carry extra axles and u joints!!

Note to readers from Kegan: The pictures shows I am running BFG a/ts which is NOT my normal tire, I run 33/12.50 Baha claws for wheeling, A/T rest of the time. I drive my jeep 1500+ miles a month and the BFG wear much better on the highway.
