4" Foundation Series Kit for 1997-2006 Wrangler TJ by Iron Rock Off Road

4" Foundation Series Kit for 1997-2006 Wrangler TJ by Iron Rock Off Road

When people think of off-roading one of the first vehicles that come to mind is the Jeep Wrangler.  Modifying and upgrading your Wrangler can be an ongoing process in making it perform better while also becoming the ultimate off-road vehicle.  There are many different aspects that can be modified and improved in order to create the best off-roading vehicle possible, there are so many that beginners may begin to feel overwhelmed by all of the options available to them.  To help make the process easier on you, we are going to offer you some of the most common upgrades that should be made first.

The first thing you should do is to lift your Jeep, this can be done either by taking it to a mechanic who has experience working with off-road vehicles, or if you are mechanically inclined you can perform the lift on your own.  There are two types of lift kits to choose from, suspension lifts or body lifts.  A body lift is used to raise the body of your Jeep while leaving the suspension in its original position.  A suspension lift is used to add a higher suspension system to your Jeep.  Jeep lift kits are designed to provide your Jeep with more ground clearance and to make your vehicle more manageable on the off-road trails.

After you have chosen and installed a lift kit, the next modification you should make is to your tires.  In order for your vehicle to perform at its best while off-roading you should choose a set of tires that will provide you with the traction and performance necessary to enjoy your time on the trails.  Once you lift your Jeep the stock tires will look a little out of place, this is why you should purchase a set of larger tires that will improve your stability on the trails as well as making your vehicle look even better.

The next modification that many off-roaders add is a winch.  If you are planning to spend a lot of time on the trails it is likely that you may become stuck.  Installing a winch on your Jeep will allow you to pull yourself out of tricky situation.  A winch also comes in handy if any of your friends should become stuck, you will be able to help them.  Having your own winch can save you hours of waiting for someone else to come along and help you.  These are only a few of the most common upgrades that off-roaders make to their vehicles; if you are a beginner these are great places to begin your modifications.

Front Tubular Bumper Shiny Black Without Hoop For Jeep CJ And Wrangler

Front Tubular Bumper Shiny Black Without Hoop For Jeep CJ And Wrangler

Many beginner off-roaders think that simply by purchasing a 4 x 4 they are ready to hit the trails and take on some rough terrain. What they don’t know is that without adding the proper off-roading accessories, they may unknowingly cause serious damage to their vehicle. Off-roading accessories have been designed to protect your vehicle while you are off-roading. Installing the proper equipment can make your off-roading experience all the more fun while also keeping you safe.

Many vehicles that come straight off the show room floor were designed for use primarily in cities and not on rough terrain. By adding a suspension lift kit to your vehicle you will be rewarded with improved ground clearance. This will provide you with added height to your vehicle and allow you to easily drive over any larger obstacles that other vehicles couldn’t attempt. A lift kit is designed to give you the extra clearance needed on many trails and prevents any damage from occurring to the underside of your vehicle.

Adding shocks that were designed primarily for off-road use will improve your vehicle’s performance. Shocks are designed to control the motion of your vehicle while keeping it from bouncing all over the place on a particularly bumpy trail. There are some things to take into consideration when choosing the appropriate shocks for your vehicle, you will want to choose a model that provides you with the maximum propelling force applied to the load, the speed at which you will travelling and the conditions of the terrain you will be primarily driving on will help you choose a shock that is suited for those requirements.

Adding an after-market bumper to your vehicle is also recommended. Many stock bumpers do not offer the level of protection that is required by off-roading vehicles. Because of the sometimes dense and rough terrain, having a bumper that offers protection to your radiator and engine is optimal. A proper off-roading bumper will protect your engine from being gorged by a tree limb or an outcropping of rocks. The last thing you want to experience while on the trails is a punctured radiator.
These are only a few of the many accessories that are available to customize your off-roading vehicle. If you are not sure of what parts you will need, explain to an expert the conditions of the areas you will driving in and you will be directed to the proper equipment.

Got Lift?

A lift kit on a Jeep looks sweet – no doubt, but is it for everyone? Not necessarily. Here are a few things to consider if you are thinking of getting a lift kit to sweeten your ride or get the clearance your looking for in some serious off roading.

First, think of the primary use of your Jeep. If your primary use of your Jeep is pavement, and you just to do a lift modification for looks, which is cool, don’t get me wrong, you will not need as aggressive of a lift as someone who primary use is off roading. If your primary use of your Jeep is off roading and you hit the trails hard with a variety of extremes, you best make sure you get a lift that can handle the pressure. That is where your research will come in. Before selecting a lift kit for your Jeep, hang out with others that have them already installed in their ride. Ride with them and get a feel for how a lift can change the feel of your ride. The more different people you talk to the better. Read reviews on various lift kits, and if you belong to a Jeep Off Roading Club, watch how well various lift kits work on the trails.

No matter how great your buddy may say his Lift Kit is on his Jeep doesn’t necessarily mean it is the one for you. Take into consideration your budget. You can spend a few hundred dollars or a few thousand dollars on the kit alone, that is not including installation. If you have the capability of installing the kit on your own, great, but if not, you had best add labor into the cost of having a lift kit installed into your budget as well. Take into any other modifications that you may have to do or want to do when installing your lift. Will you need bigger tires? You may wind up needing control arms, adjustable track bars, longer brake lines, better steering components, new drive shaft, slip yoke eliminator, gears, axles, and the list can go on. If your Jeep is a work in progress and sitting idle until complete, this may not even be an issue, but if you are wanting to hit the trails or road right after you are done, consider all cost that may come about in your budget.

There is a wide variety of lift kits available and don’t let the list of “might needs” scare you off. Just set your budget, do your research for lift kits that are going to meet your needs and your budget, and if you are lucky either you can install the lift kit yourself or have a friend or two that can give you a hand for some drinks and maybe a few Jeep detailing after a day of mudding! 😉
