There are a number of modifications that many people want to make to their Jeep, either because they think it looks cool or because they heard someone else got one and it worked for them. However, there are just five modifications that every off roader needs on their Jeep before they take it to do some serious off roading.

  1. Winch. The winch is the single most important upgrade you will ever make to your Jeep. If you plan on going off roading with friends, a winch can keep them out of the ditch and on the road (or lack thereof). Everyone who goes off roading should have a winch to help out buddies on the same terrain. There are some situations that only a winch can get you out of. If a Jeep rolls a winch is the only way to salvage it. A winch could get you home, or get a buddy home, or tow a stranger home in the snow. You never know when it will come in handy.
  2. Choose appropriate Jeep tires for the type of off roading you will be doing. Keep in mind that if you get a tire much bigger than your stock tires you will have to retool the gear differential. This is not as expensive or difficult as it sounds, so don’t be worried. Also keep in mind that if you are getting a lift, you will need bigger tires for certain, so plan accordingly.
  3. The jeep lift is one of the first things all off roaders think to do to their Jeep, and rightly so. A lift increases clearance. This means you can drive over bigger stuff without getting stuck. It also means you can drive through some water sources without getting wet, such as a small creek. The type of lift you get will depend on the type of off roading you want to do. Choose carefully, as this is an expensive modification that you only want to do once.
  4. Rock rails come standard on the Rubicon model of Wrangler, but for any other Jeep you plan on taking off road this is a must have upgrade. It protects your vehicle from so many things, not just rocks. Heck, it will even protect your Jeep from people who open their door too wide. It also acts as an extra step, which is good if you got a lift and aren’t that tall.
  5. Differential lockers are also an important upgrade that comes standard on the Rubicon model. Lockers cause both wheels to spin identically, improving traction in low traction settings, such as snow, ice, or mud.

4" Foundation Series Kit for 1997-2006 Wrangler TJ by Iron Rock Off Road

4" Foundation Series Kit for 1997-2006 Wrangler TJ by Iron Rock Off Road

When people think of off-roading one of the first vehicles that come to mind is the Jeep Wrangler.  Modifying and upgrading your Wrangler can be an ongoing process in making it perform better while also becoming the ultimate off-road vehicle.  There are many different aspects that can be modified and improved in order to create the best off-roading vehicle possible, there are so many that beginners may begin to feel overwhelmed by all of the options available to them.  To help make the process easier on you, we are going to offer you some of the most common upgrades that should be made first.

The first thing you should do is to lift your Jeep, this can be done either by taking it to a mechanic who has experience working with off-road vehicles, or if you are mechanically inclined you can perform the lift on your own.  There are two types of lift kits to choose from, suspension lifts or body lifts.  A body lift is used to raise the body of your Jeep while leaving the suspension in its original position.  A suspension lift is used to add a higher suspension system to your Jeep.  Jeep lift kits are designed to provide your Jeep with more ground clearance and to make your vehicle more manageable on the off-road trails.

After you have chosen and installed a lift kit, the next modification you should make is to your tires.  In order for your vehicle to perform at its best while off-roading you should choose a set of tires that will provide you with the traction and performance necessary to enjoy your time on the trails.  Once you lift your Jeep the stock tires will look a little out of place, this is why you should purchase a set of larger tires that will improve your stability on the trails as well as making your vehicle look even better.

The next modification that many off-roaders add is a winch.  If you are planning to spend a lot of time on the trails it is likely that you may become stuck.  Installing a winch on your Jeep will allow you to pull yourself out of tricky situation.  A winch also comes in handy if any of your friends should become stuck, you will be able to help them.  Having your own winch can save you hours of waiting for someone else to come along and help you.  These are only a few of the most common upgrades that off-roaders make to their vehicles; if you are a beginner these are great places to begin your modifications.

If you’re a serious Jeep off-roader you will know how important having a winch can be. If you or one of your off-road companions should happen to become stuck, you will wish someone had a winch on their vehicle. A winch can help you get of some sticky situations such as being stuck in the mud, or encountering some water that was deeper than it first appeared. A winch can be a life saver when your off-roading. After having to use it one time, you will be glad that you spent the extra money and time installing a winch on your vehicle.

If you choose to install the winch yourself, there are some things that need to be taken care of before and while you are installing your new winch. Below are instructions for installing your winch.
• First you will want to disconnect the negative cable from the battery and then remove the positive cable. This will insure that there is no juice running through your vehicle while you are working.
• The next step is to attach the fairlead to the front of the winch plate using two fairlead bolts with a torque wrench.
• Next attach the winch to the winch plate using four winch plate bolts. The bolts should be long enough to go from the back into the feet of the winch.
• Now you will need to unbolt the four bumper bolts located on your Jeep’s bumper that are used to hold the tow hooks.
• In this step you will require the help of a friend to hold the winch in place on the bumper directly over the four bumper bolt holes.
• While your friend is holding the winch in place, replace the bumper bolts through the holes located on the winch. This will attach the winch to your bumper.
• Now it’s time to wire it for power. Pull the black and red power cables located on the winch through the front grill of your jeep. You will have to run the cables past the radiator on the passenger side of the Jeep.
• Attach the red power cable from the winch onto the red battery post and tighten. Then do the same with the black power cable, attaching it to the black battery post in the same way.
• Once you’ve followed all of the steps you can now reconnect the battery cables and then turn on your Jeep to test your new winch.

If you have followed all of the steps, your winch should be up and ready to use.

Do you know how easy it is to pimp out your Jeep’s exterior? Well, it isn’t as hard as some would like to think it is. You can easily make some simple adjustments or changes that will have your Jeep looking more rugged, improve its safety, or just give it some personal flare.

Let’s start with armor and protection like rocker panels, skid plates, differential protections, roll bars, roll cages, side steps, etc. Jeep armor protects essential components of your Jeep adding safety but can also add a nice rugged statement as well. It shows you care about your Jeep and that you know your stuff when it comes to off roading.

Body lifts and mounts definitely add a noticeable statement to your Jeep. Ontop of some oversized tires, body lifts give you that clearance you need to get through the roughest terrain without tearing up your under carriage or worse. Lifts come in as small as one inch to as high as 3 inches. Then there is Suspension Lift Kits that can take your Jeep over the top and screams out “Beat that!”

Then for even more added protection, style, or maybe an upgrade there are Jeep Bumpers, Spare Tire Carriers, Hitches, and Towing accessories.

Then you have the top of your Jeep you can customize with a new top – there are hard tops, soft tops, bikini tops, windjammers and Dusters and more.

You can tint the window for an added flare as well.

There are racks and storage and winches and recovery gear that can all add your own personal touch to your Jeep. Then there are the lights! Jeep lights have always kind of made their own statement. In the dark of the night when you see headlights coming your way you can spot a Jeep out of the crowd in an instant. You can take that distinguishing factor and go the extra mile with a lighting bar with auxiliary lights, or add some fun lighting covers.

You can give your Jeep a subtle change or an extreme makeover, show your style, your personality, the love of your Jeep by pimping out your Jeep’s exterior.
